One of the most interesting things that I have observed this week is all the proclamations from the "right to die" crowd who bitch about how useless "these people" are, and how much of a waste of resources they are.

Very illuminating.

I can't help but think back to when our first son was born, very prematurely. The OB-GYN told us to think of him as "sort of a miscarriage," despite the fact that he was 6 months gestation.

He was born, by pure coincidence, in a hospital that had a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and when asked by the perinatologists whether we wanted to let him die or try to save him we said that we approved them taking every possible step to save him.

The odds were against us, and we knew it, so despite the pain we were not surprised that he did not make it. It was hard to take at the time, but we felt good that we had at least tried. One thing that made it easier was that the perinatologists told us that even if he did not make it, they would learn things that would make it easier to save the next child.

These days it's not a surprise to save kids that premature.

I am thankful that we found ourselves in the presence of people who didn't just tell us "think of him as sort of a miscarriage." The week we had with him remains precious.

He was a human being, not just a lump of tissue. And every day children just like him are sucked from their mother's womb because they are inconvenient.
