I know what you mean, because I got the same dose of poetry as literature as everyone else does. Even though I was always interested in English literature, I really didn't like Shakespeare because we had to read the plays instead of have them performed. I think it's hard to make them come alive, but that it's important to do so.

The same thing with poetry in general--children who become interested in poetry will go back and read some of the classics and perhaps enjoy them. One problem with doing that is that it is sometimes difficult to understand them just for the images that words create--one can be lost without understanding the history or mythology or religious symbolism or whatever is behind them. I think one reason I enjoy modern poetry is that it is more likely that I already understand the references.

I always left poetry books lying around my house, and read my daughter age appropriate poems from children's books of poetry when she was a little girl. It doesn't have to old and stuffy! Paul McCartney and the singer Jewel have published books of poetry. I took my daughter to an Irish poetry festival, and there were several modern Irish poets that I came to love immensely.

Borders Books has amateur poetry nights where anyone can stand up and read their own poems. I loved those the summer my daughter was writing a lot of poetry and wanted to go. As teenagers do, though, she soon moved on to other things.
