I think the way we teach Shakespeare is a travesty. He did not write to be read, he wrote to be performed- that's why there are no descriptions of the fights- those are filled in by the company performing the play.

There is no better way to kill a love of Shakespeare than introduce kids to him through reading.

I had an absolutely thrilling experience with my seniors, when I showed them Titus. They didn't want to experience ANY MORE Shakepeare- not ever- and they whined about seeing it. But by the scene at the dinner party, the boys were saying "WIND IT BACK" "Let's SEE that AGAIN". Needless to say they are all huge fans of Titus Andronicus- a Shakespeare play that manages to catch the attention of even the most jaded teenage film goer.
