redfish,

I just finished reading James Stewart's "DisneyWar." While the cultural battles got a lot of publicity, the Weinsteins's problems with Michael Eisner and Disney were mostly about money and control issues. Owning the Miramax label gave Disney an opening into segments of the movie market that it could not tap into with the "Disney" brand. The Weinsteins got access to capital. A win-win for both parties.

A book that provides significantly more detail about Miramax, and a book that I would heartily recommend to you, particularly given your interest in films, is Peter Biskind's Down and Dirty Pictures : Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film.

The book is actually quite extraordinary. Not only is it very informative, it is also pretty damn entertaining. I found myself seeking out a lot of the films that were mentioned in the book. Harvey Weinstein comes across as a monster, though a talented one.
