What is the financial cost for keeping these people alive?

Your comparison suggests that the issue is about whether or not they're worth keeping alive. I am not talking about that.

What I'm trying to get across is that, if you want to change the law to avoid Terri's death, you're going to end up with a law that keeps a lot of people alive who would not otherwise be kept alive. That has consequences. One of the consequences is cost to Medicare. Another consequence is the pain to them and to their loved ones while they linger when they wouldn't have wanted to.

The folks who have been arguing for Terri to be put back on the feeding tube are fixated on this one touching case. But there are a lot of similarly situated people under the radar who would be negatively affected if you disallowed death for all those without a living will. I'm trying to get across to you that there is a cost to saving Terri. It doesn't matter exactly what the cost it. The point is that there is one and you can't just ignore it. It's not just about Terri, as you seem to assume, but about her entire cohort and their wishes and their loved ones and their pain.
