The split here and in the country is between the religious and the secular. All the argument and reasoning going on is just to justify that basic split in philosophy.

I don't buy that. I recognize the split you're talking about between absolutist pro-lifers and the rest of us on the question of whether Terri should live or die, but I don't think that's all of it. I think that you also have on the life side the sentimental, cuddly types and the professional nurturers regardless of religion and politics.

You also have a split on strategy between those who understand and respect how our country works and those who are either ignorant or, to coin a phrase I heard earlier today from George Will, "results oriented to an unhealthy degree." That's not a religious thing.
