Some people born in the Southern states might differ on that...the US War of Nothern Aggresion (aka War Between the States, Civil War) of 1860-1865 had large numbers of casualties, displacements, theft of lands and property, etc.

Some Southerns fled to Brazil, Canada, or the Western US.

*****

The other prespective is that many people in the US or their ancestors DID have to flee from Europe/Asia/ where ever, so just like your friends, the effects of war feature strongly in their family history.

Being in Silicon Valley, easily as many as 15% the people I work with eihter had to flee or their parents had to flee.
These are not the economic migrants, and these are the ones whio might be willing to dicuss their story---

Cambodia, VietNam, El Salvador, Iraq, Iran, PRC (form Commies), Taiwan (yes from KMT), Phillipines (from Fredinand Marcos) Bulgaria (from both Commies & Nazis - the guy's grand mother was cut in half and throw in a lake), Estonia, Poland, Chekslovakia, Moldova, Ukarine, and Cuba.

In another generation or two this prespective will fade...
