I suppose GSM ASICs are produced by the GSM Guild and they have competed away margins so non-guild members aren't in a position to produce them and charge 16% [or more] royalties.

Texas Instruments has 50%+ of the GSM baseband market and still manages net profit margins in the 15% range.

You could charge $40 for the MSM6300 (about $25 more than a GSM/GPRS baseband with integrated apps processor) and have net margins in the 50%+ range....and it would still be cheaper for a company like Sendo (assuming a $200 handset) than using TI's baseband and paying 20% royalties.
