Old news: DOJ Closes Probe Of First Data Unit Western Union DOW JONES NEWSWIRES March 17, 2005 10:38 a.m. WASHINGTON -- First Data Corp. (FDC) said the Department of Justice closed a civil investigation of the company's Western Union Financial Services Inc. unit Wednesday. According to a Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the civil investigation concerned Western Union's contracting practices in the money transfer service industry. The filing said the Department of Justice closed the investigation because the facts didn't support a claim that Western Union's contracting practices have had an anticompetitive effect on markets for money transfer or emergency bill payment services in the U.S. Thirteen states also participated in the investigation, the filing said. To date 10 of the 13 states have closed their investigations. The filing didn't name the states. Western Union expects to hear from the remaining three states concerning the status of their investigations in the near future, according to the filing. First Data is an electronic-commerce and payment services company based in Greenwood Village, Colo.
