<<Any idea what the application would be in AWACS?>>

I can think of many useful applications. Maps used to be stored on tape, this was improved to disk but even so, the militarized disks on the latest upgrade were only big enough to hold so many maps. A hypothetical application might be to redundantly store all maps in a disk array and have multiple servers be able to track different maps depending on what targets the operator as tracking at his station. There are also mission playback and record options that can get very disk intensive. I can also think of some start-up, restart, These is a SCSI example but I can think of VME bus, and certain LAN improvements that could be made.

<<Ever looked inside an AWACS?>>

Yup.
