Pat Sajak was a weatherman on Channel 4 in Los Angeles before his most famous role as game show host. Now he's a polical pundit? Without education the most important part of being informed, i.e., knowing what mistakes other cultures and people have made, is not usually possible. Reading philosophy or other great works allows people to make decisions without making the philosophical mistakes that other people have made.

For instance, one of the cornerstones of science is the concept of falsifiable claims. Every system or theory must have at its core an observation that would show it to be false. If someone has a system that lacks this, then it is not scientific but rather a belief system. We have political pundits now that never entertain what observations would make their claims false. They don't even know that such a requirement is necessary. Many philosophical positions have this flaw and it is a cardinal waste of time to mull over these issues with people who don't accept that there is any way to falsify their claims.
