It is my understanding that the "return" will be a second "appearing", when the saints will be caught up with Christ in the air. It is seven years later at the end of the tribulation when the saints will return physically with Christ to the earth and he will set foot on the mount of Olives and enter the eastern gate of Jerusalem and set up the millenial 1000 year kingdom.
