Interesting. What are the passages that indicate Saturday is the day to worship? The passage that comes to mind is something like "on the 7th day, God rested", which would imply Sunday, but then again the Muslims worship on Friday, and generally work Saturday to Thursday, so for them Friday is the 7th day.
That is the correct passage, and Saturday is that day (at least so the Jews have always thought). Sunday as a day of worship is linked to the Christian era, which adopted the Roman day of worship (the Sun) which also nicely dovetailed with Christs (the Son's) Resurrection day. Around 300 AD I think under Constantine. Unfortunately Friday, Saturday, or Sunday all suffer from the Flat Earth heritage, so are a little problematic on a round world.
I always thought a good novel about the origins of Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions could be written based on travel. Three Jews are friends in Jerusalem. One friend stays there. The other two travel around the globe, one west, the other east. When the two travellers return to Jerusalem, one is now worshipping on Sunday and one on Friday, assuming they kept exact track of the week while they travelled which good Jews would. So they take to arguing and accusing the others of being wicked heretics, and each starts his own religion with its day of worship. |
