David,

What is your opinion on the new LMTS printers? They are as fast as the new ENCD PROes in their "enchanced 8 color mode" and almost as fast as the P5000 in the standard mode. The pricing seems very aggressive but again, piezo is the future.

Yes, 8 color isn't really as much a big deal as I thought it was. Conventional 4 color CMYK can accurately reproduce approx 50% of the pantone spectrum but 6 color can do approx 90%.

I don't know how many of you have backgrounds in math but I saw this represented as a mathematical function and there was an asymptote at continuous tone, so you are correct when you say that the step to 6 color is much bigger than the step to 8 color. 8 color can only do about 93%. It would take an infinite amount of colors to achieve continuous tone but the human eye can hardly tell the difference with 6 @ 300 dpi.

It really makes me wonder why LMTS didn't run the new 6 color HiFi color standard and then add spot colors or digital clearcoat with the other heads.

Encad releases new media today for a grand total of 24 different types compared to RGFX with 5. Your right about the quality of Encad but their marketing is divine. I would really like to see an alliance here (RGFX + ENCD) even if it isn't a merger. I read in the annual report that RGFX would be marketing another company's product (the Mimaki JV-1300) under the P1000 name because of their lack of experience in marketing. I have since seen the Mimaki printer everywhere, along with software support by several different programs but no word of RGFX yet.

I read somewhere that the advantage in Encad's gamut comes from their inks. Is that true or is it a combo of ink and media or just media.
