AFAIK, Israel is mostly secular so I think banks might be open, but religious Jews observe Saturday as the seventh day, and would refrain from a long list of activities on that day including banking I'm sure.
Banks are open Saturday to Wednesday where I am, most companies have Thursday off (or work a half day), and Friday is the second day of the weekend. Where is that, and what is the history?
BTW, the history of weeks is most interesting and quite varied. Most cultures had some division below month, supposedly for market cycles. Weeks seemed to have varied from about 4 days to 12 or more. The Jewish week, adopted by the Romans, is the one that won out in the end. Where the Jews got it from is not entirely clear, perhaps the Chaldeans, as most Jewish though seems to have its roots there.
Interestingly enough, the reckoning of time in general, from calenders to minutes and seconds, and the development of clocks as well was largely driven by religion. An interesting tale. |
