I have really mixed feelings about the European Union. If I had lived in Ireland at the time, I would have voted against it. I believe that individual European states should be able to control their own economies, and they cannot with a common currency. I also believe it is dangerous to lose control of your country's borders, which you do under this scenario. Anyone who can make it into any European country can go anywhere within the whole union's borders.

On the other hand, they are doing really good work on public health and animal rights issues, and the Union's economic clout is healthy for the individual states within it. The Union is responsible for the growth of Ireland into a modern, middle class country. They poured billions of dollars into building navigable roads so that goods to get to the borders, for example.
