"Linux is not ready for the masses."

I think she was referring to the IT industry, not "the masses". Linux works really well server-side. Long as you don't want to do your taxes or whatever on it.

Longhorn looks a little less of a boat anchor now.

They've removed the over-ambitious database-like file system (which would have been another .net disaster... does good things, but performs like a 500 pound pig on valium).

They've decided to make the video-game-like 3D user interface a separate add-on which will retrofit to XP. Which is great, because that means it will be possible to run Longhorn without that useless eye-candy.

The remaining unknown is how heavy-handed they will be with DRM. If Longhorn takes away ANY significant freedom from consumers, it will be the biggest flop in the history of Microsoft. The masses have spoken, and they WANT to pirate media content.

That aside, if we get a core product that's the "Windows 98" version of the "Windows 95" XP, I could see that being appealing to me personally... basically a pumped version of XP SP3, I'd pay for it.
