Yes, intellectual artifice the film is. It is still captivating, however, even taken on the most surface and pedestrian level. A filmed play, indeed. I do think the lack of distraction from the characters makes it harder to escape, though, and so it is very intense. It did not occur to me with no advance briefing that it was an anti-American film, but I can certainly understand more of the symbolism now, especially about the way we treat immigrants. Thank you!
