Bill,

I haven't been following the freedom of speech conversation very closely, but as a free speech advocate, I'd have to pinch my nose and allow the KKK or whoever to march and chant their hate speech. It's only by allowing the most offensive speech that we truly feel the import of what an open society means in terms of the freedom to THINK, which is what freedom of speech truly means.

I also believe that reasonable people see hate speech for what it is.

I've been reading 20th century Russian poetry for the past couple of months. Many of the best poets were sent to labor camps, censured economically, or forced into exile for years and years. Many of them did not live to see their work published, as it wasn't until Glasnost that the hidden manuscripts surfaced. And this is beautiful, courageous work, truly moving even to me, an overfed American who's never had to consider my personal safety or the idea that my thoughts on paper would be censured.

In my opinion, Despite the fact that I find KKK-style hate speech offensive, it's got a right in our society to be spoken.

What are your thoughts?
