Ref stumble that ticked Dell off

I think that the Dell tick off was a relatively minor affair. Dell was unhappy with 4GHz + Prescott because the cooling needed probably demanded hurricane intensity airflow, and was too noisy. Intel recovered from that in short order with a new dual core road map and innovations to reduce power dissipation. After all Dell still remains an all Intel shop.

However a much big disaster was the price increase for Flash Memory for cell phones, which happened 2+ years ago. Almost overnight Intel share of Flash at Nokia went from 60+ percent to zero. AMD was let in, and the incremental Flash revenue helped AMD survive. All design activity with other Intel chips for cell phones came to an abrupt end. It has taken two plus years to partially repair the damage. Intel is back at Nokia but with a much smaller share. Nokia and other cell phone companies are reluctant to design in Intel XScale and DSP chips. The customer thinking goes "How can we design in a single source part when the vendor tried to gouge us on multi-source parts. We would be completely shafted if the vendor later tried to gouge us." How could Intel marketing and management be this arrogant and blind in a area considered vital for Intel's future growth ? I am finally seeing a few Motorola smart phones with XSCALE chips, but it should have been a lot better.
