One aspect of this "sex offender" notification I haven't seen discussed in many places is what kind of people are labeled sex offenders. For instance, do many people know a 17 year old boy who has sex with a 16 year old girl can be labeled a sex offender? If the parents of a 15 year old girl know a young man is having sex with their daughter, they can file statutory rape charges and the state may accept the mandate to investigate the crime. In the state of Washington in becomes more complicated, for instance a 15 year old girl can have sex, but only to someone within 2 years of her age. At 16 she is given a 4 year consensual limit. However, I recently read the state is changing the law to any male over the age of 21 who has sex with someone under 18 is guilty of statutory rape. Literally days and hours of the calendar can make the difference between being labeled a sex offender for life, and nothing happening at all. I had to deal with one young sailor who put himself in this situation and it was damn difficult. The kid was 21 and the girl 17. Guess what, the dad finds out, is looking for some revenge and goes after the kid for rape. It was an ugly, ugly, scene in which the girl finally admitted the entire relationship was consensual, after someone’s camcorder recording of the party turned up during the investigation! Anyway.....what I am trying to say in my clumsy way is there should be a way in which we as a society "VERY CLEARLY" differentiate between sex offenders of this nature, and the ones we all want to put a gun to their genitals; that being the ones that prey on young children. I guess I took a long time to say that. Sorry…
