Good points, Michael. Getting a trusted figure as leader is an important point. I think Bradley is right, the Democrats are still mesmerized by the model of FDR and JFK, the great charismatic leader. But looking for charisma without buying into a core set of principles sets you up for a Bill Clinton, who said all the right stuff, but at the end of the day, it was all about Bill.

The lack of coherent ideas ties into the politics of personal destruction. When there is no package of ideas to push, it is very easy to devolve into mere name-calling. Really, what else have you got to talk about?

The Republicans are not innocents here by any means, since they left a series of bad precedents for polarization and incivility in the Clinton years (not to mention an impeachment), but the Democrats are paying back in kind with far too much of the MoveOn.org/Dean school of "the Republicans are just evil, that's why they do what they do!". That is no substitute for a platform.
