Denial, Anger, Rationalization, Depression, Acceptance

Where do you think we are? By reading the various threads last night my guess is Anger

Here's one for the denial file. Helene Meisler, who writes for Realmoney dot com, has been comparing this year's "parabolic" move in XOM to QCOM's parabola back in the nasdaq bubble days.

XOM hit a high of about $45 in 2000, and is trading for about $60 today. That is about a 6% compounded rate of appreciation for the stock. Between the end of 1999 and January 2000, QCOM ran from $3.30 to $100 for a 3000% annual return!

Denial means finding a way to believe that some uncomfortable change isn't really happening. Calling the oil price a bubble, blaming it on speculators or a "terror premium," are all ways that people pretend they won't have to face the implications of a higher oil price.
