It is bad news. It would be nice to be able to spare people the lingering illnesses smoking can cause. While I support people having the freedom to use their drugs of choice (although I do NOT support them using them in my face, while they befoul the air I need to breathe), I also support public health policy aimed at dissuading people from particularly harmful activities, like smoking, and drinking to excess.

The prevention of human misery is a worthy goal for society. Some of us may disagree a bit on what constitutes human misery, but I think we could probably all agree that dying from emphysema and smoking related cancers is fairly miserable, and that we should probably do our best to make sure young people do not suffer that fate.
