Back in 1998 we felt more comfortable to joke around here (though not for long)- about all sorts of things. Unfortunately, people who go back to use lighthearted comments from that time go back to use them with malice in their hearts, and have no interest in context, or humor. I think back in 1998 we all had more of a feeling that we were "talking" to people- and we were still using the kind of humor we would have used with people in 3d- who would have known we weren't being malicious. Unfortunately that only works on the net with people who are not actually coming after you because they actually are malicious- people with anger in their hearts will read everything in the worst possible light. It's unfortunate, but we really do have to be very careful on SI, and on the net in general.

I joke about almost nothing anymore- knowing that it's all bound to be taken the wrong way if I do .

(But I apologize if my joking post from 1998, posted here for the obvious purpose of stirring up trouble, causes anyone any pain at all...)
