The ability to write off a much larger amount of a large vehicle (> 6000lbs IIRC) was simply a handout to Detroit. At the time, the Japs didn't compete much in the fullsize pickup/SUV market, so all the farmers and construction workers bought and wrote off their 350 Cummins equipped energy hogs. But we'll expend a few 100's of Billions for wars in the M.E. to protect our interests. Go figure...
