Steve,

What I'm trying to figure out is why Fibre Channel would be a compelling solution in AWACS. There are several possibilities, including speed, scalability, and distance. Since Ancor did not indicate whether 1/4 gig or 1 gig FC was being used, I'm figuring that it must have been 1/4 gig. (A safer assumption, at any rate.) If I use that as a starting point, FC would be about 2 to 2.5 times faster than Fast Ethernet, and a lot more scalable. If used as a SCSI replacement, distance is an obvious advantage. I think the most likely scenario is a fast, scalable, LAN interconnect for the workstations and servers within the AWACS plane.

How many people (or workstations) would be in a typical AWACS?
