2005 New Jersey Governor Race
polipundit.com
In New Jersey, the Republican Gubernatorial primary is fast approaching. The two leading candidates are Bret Schundler, the Republican nominee who lost to James McGreevey in 2001, and Douglas Forrester, the Republican nominee who lost to Frank Lautenberg in 2002.

Thus far the race for the Republican nomination has been dominated by a series of county endorsements. Forrester has been uneven - while the wealthy executive has lots of money, his campaign is poorly organized and seems to be in a state of perpetual confusion. That has led to several humilliating defeats to a lesser tier of Republican candidates in Bergen and Ocean Counties. However Forrester remains the candidate of a GOP establishment that believes only a moderate Republican can win statewide.

Schundler suffers from the image of being a radical who cannot win statewide. While everyone acknowledged his intellect and leadership skills, Schundler was a poor candidate four years ago, often getting off message and never successfully reconciling the party leadership to his candidacy. The former Jersey City mayor’s fundraising has been mediocre this year, and in the most expensive state in the country, such a problem may prove fatal to his campaign.

In short, it is all about charisma versus cash in the Garden State. If only we had someone with both charisma and cash.
