Paul,

Re: "Jerry now says AMD will ship 1,000,000 K6's in Q3 and AMD will LOSE money in Q3!"

The other interesting piece of information in the AMD announcement:

"Sept. 3, 1997, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) said it expects to report a "small operating loss" for
the third quarter of 1997.

Commenting on the anticipated loss, AMD said that "in the face of strong demand for AMD-K6 MMX
Enhanced Processors, we are ramping Fab 25 as rapidly as possible on current 0.35-micron technology
while preparing for the migration to 0.25-micron technology, where pre-production has already
commenced. In the current quarter we expect to produce slightly more than 1,000,000 AMD-K6 units,"
noting that this figure "is at the low end of the production range projected at the beginning of the
quarter." AMD noted that "unit output at this level will not provide sufficient revenues to offset the
significant costs associated with ramping a product with the complexity of the AMD-K6 processor."

is the comment about "significant costs associated with ramping a product
with the complexity of the AMD-K6 processor." This indicates to
me a problem with getting the yields to anticipated levels. What should
worry thread posters is that going from .35um to .25um technology, AMD
will leverage much of the .35um process while also adding even more
technically challenging unit processes (a good example is DUV lithography). This will be even more "complex" and I would expect even more yield problems.

Make It So,
Yousef
