In the case of hyponetremia I know of, I asked EXACTLY that question: Why not pour in a slug of electrolytes to correct the imbalance quickly? I was told this would almost certainly result in rapid death and the balance had to be restored gradually. The race was ro restore it to normal before irreversible brain damage occurred.
