The media is covering the death of Pope John Paul II, not just because he was the Pope, but because of the man he was. He was one of the giants of the 20th century. He was one of the main reasons for the fall of the Soviet Empire. We will not see his like again.

The only giant we have left is Iron Maggie, and even she wasn't as much of a giant as Karol Wojtyla, Ronald Reagan, or Winston Churchill.

There were giants on the earth in those days because they were called on to stand up to unimaginable tyranny, and they took the call.

We were graced with their presence, and we are a little less because of their passing.
