One of the interesting things about reading Friedman's better work is that, however, it skims across the tops of things, it gets me thinking about just why it seems so superficial.
Superficial for you, but for a lot of us - this is deep stuff.
To reach the audience that he gets, this is about as deep as he can go without losing a lot of us.
Even at this depth, I think he would start losing the attention of people with the intellectual capacity of, for example, our President.
Nevertheless, I think it starts people thinking.
If I were a mother of young children growing up today, I would raise them to compete on a global basis. I would still have tremendous advantage over the mothers in Russia, India, and China.
For people who are deeply intellectual, they will have no problems. But, for those that do not get even to read the NY Times, their children may have difficulties in maintaining a standard of living edge in the years ahead.
