Flat Panel Displays v. Retinal Displays ?

Jonathan asks:
How do you think successful commercialization of
VRD will affect the future of the FPD market?

Good question...in the long run, I believe that chewing gum wrappers will contain active displays, and most eyeballs will too. But in the near term (where I do all my investing), I believe there is also room for massive growth in both types of displays. Initially, each will have niche markets such as military cockpits and notebook computers, then each will branch out towards commodity items as the prices drop.

For the next several years, I can imagine exponential growth for both with prices dropping steadily and volumes rising much faster. Recent articles in Information Display seem to be pointing at revenue growth rates around 15% per year. My guess is that it will be higher than that.

BTW - the market for computer displays exceeded TV for the first time in 1995.
