ME

If people knew me as I am,
Knew just how much of me is sham,
And understood the inner me--
I wonder what their thoughts would be?

I wish myself could leave me here
And watch me close from somewhere near,
And tell me how I look from there,
But if I could I wouldn't dare;

I'd have to laugh right in my face
And take me off some lonely place,
And tell me what an ass I am,
And teach me how to be a man.
