I understand that the cardinal from Nigeria has a shot at it. I really think the new pope should be from either S. America or Africa, preferably the former given that half of all Catholics live in S.America.

John Paul tells his followers in Africa that contraceptives are against the church's teachings. AIDS kills thousands of Africans everyday, and these poor people can't afford the drugs to fight back the desease. It's nothing short of criminal.

I disagreed with a number of his positions but this one is probably one of the worst. I am not a Catholic. I don't understand the Catholic Church's prohibition against the pill and the condom. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

My inclination is to suggest that they select a younger guy as Pope who might be more current but then I heard a twenty something priest describe how its okay to have gay feelings but if you act on them, you are a sinner. BTW had he not been wearing a black rope, I might have thought he was be gay.

It seems the Papacy is about 50 years behind Western culture. Maybe that's due to the influences of the more conservative, third world countries where Catholicism is strongest.

Whatever the cause, the Papacy's edicts hurt the third world countries much worse than they do the more developed ones. Africa is an unfortunate example.
