Indeed, you are blind if you do not see the role of oil in our decision to invade and occupy Iraq. The tribute is fourfold: It gives us control of the security of supply of the second largest oil reserves in the world -- and oil continues to be THE strategic resource in our economy. It gives US companies the right to enrich themselves rather than have contracts tied up by the Russians and French. It gives the US control of the world price, to the extent that we can force continued higher rates of pumping. It provides a way for the Iraqis to pay for the US invasion and occupation their country.

In the event, most of this has so far backfired. The oil is not flowing as intended because we cannot control Iraq. The price of oil has soared because we cannot bring production online as hoped. And it is blatantly illegal to force a conquered country to pay the costs of the invader with revenue from its natural resources -- something the US planned to do but with the shame of an illegitimate invasion on its hands the US has decided this time it cannot afford give the finger to international law yet again.

The tribute is there - in capital letters and underlined for all the world to see. You can choose to ignore it, but ignoring it does not make it go away.
