Humans are pack animals in many ways - like wolves. Hunt cooperatively in packs. That's why we get along so well with dogs - oh yeah, and providing food for the dogs.

Note this is NOT herd animals.

By the way, you can follow a leader without totally suspending critical thinking - it just takes more effort.
