No, I'm not, George. Thanks for the link. I'll try to find the time to take a look. It looks as if it's reasonably serious stuff.

Do you know if there is a literature about Lott's work? Evaluations of such in the social sciences?

A bit of googling turns up this link to some rather large criticisms. Suggests invoking Lott is not controversy free. bradycampaign.org

And here's a long essay that looks over the literature and argues against Lott. Looks quite well done. brookings.edu

For a quick summary of Donohue's conclusion:

With the benefit of more complete data than were available initially to Lott and Mustard, I conclude that the best statistical evidence does not support the claim that shall-issue laws reduce crime.
