Do you know if Lombardy or Venice is where Berlusconi originated? That would explain why those two provinces did not go over to the opposition.

Well, they are two different entities. Lombardy is a region of which Milan is the capital. It is very industrial in nature and landlocked, just north of the PO valley. Venice of course is a city in the region called Venezia. It is on the adriatic cost, east of Lombardy.

I thought Veneto was the province in which Venice is located? <It is......I just checked a map.>

In the article you posted, it said the two provinces of Lombardy and Veneto went for Berlusconi. For some reason, I thought he was from Venice and not Milan/Lombardy. However, I was wrong.....he grew up in Milan. It makes sense........Milan is a much more suitable city for a big tycoon.

I don't know if Berlusconi was born in Lombardy, but he went to college there, and he got a law degree at the U of Milan. He also setup shop there with his construction and media businesses. He is stinking rich.

Yes. I remember from my history of Europe that Lombardy and Veneto have been linked throughout Italy's history and for a while, were a separate kingdom. So I guess its not surprising they vote the same way today. Unfortunately, that still gives him a pretty strong base. Milan, at least, is not chopped liver. It ranks right up there with Rome as an important Italian city.
