--- With all due respect, I think you're overlooking the bigger story of our time: --- 'Pope's body moved'
Wow, that's bigger than Michael Jackson!
I agree that the strangest part of our Cassandra complex is the fact humanity is facing its biggest crisis since the Aztecs abandoned chitzen itza, and no one seems particularly bothered.
The problem with conspiracy theories is they are optimistic. They imply someone is in control, planning, keeping secrets, when the reality is chaos and disorder and stupidity probably explain human behavior better.
But let's get paranoid, for a minute. You know, for fun.
[1] We know that not all energy emergencies are contrived. Enron we know with certainty did deliberately manipulate electricity supplies to cause blackouts in California.
[2] The oil crises of the 1970s (there were three) were also in part a contrivance.
1973 Arab embargo following Yom Kippur War brings home realization that Texas no longer controlled oil prices. Richard Nixon imposes price controls.
1977 President Jimmy Carter appeared on national television and declared “the moral equivalent of war” on the nation’s dependency on imported oil.
1979 lines at the pump re-appear in response to revolution in Iran
Yet in 1980, following Saddam Hussein's Iraqi invasion of Iran, oil production in Iran and Iraq severely decreased, but oil lines did not reappear in the United States.
I'm not denying the reality of the Hubbert peak, or that possibility we may be at peak now.
But the paranoid view is of COURSE our government is fully aware of the challenges of peak oil -- despite the fact that our democracy never acknowledges them in debates or in the news. Carter used (or helped to create?) the crises of his time to push alternative fuels and conservation, and GW used (or helped to create with his Saudi buddies?) the crises of 911 to push his agenda (war, Armageddon, SUVs until the lord takes us).
I can’t figure out what’s more crazy – that our politicians know what’s going on with peak oil and have lied to us for decades, or we know but no politician knows, except Jimmy Carter, who forgot.
