That was based on Michael's oral testimony plus that of 4 other people. In general, there is a single trier of fact. The rest are appeals and procedural matters. This case in that regard is no differenet than millions of others. Pages 4-6 here states she made her wishes known to 5 people, one of which was Michael. This is followed by a finding "beyond all doubt" of PVS. miami.edu
