"Sourcing for most of our food has completely changed over the past twenty years."

Imported shrimp, which is mostly raised on farms, now makes up about 88 percent of the U.S. market while domestic shrimp, which is primarily caught by fisherman, makes up just 12 percent of the market.

But (domestic) shrimpers can't catch enough, and most of the shrimp Red Lobster serves now comes from overseas.
Nine of every 10 shrimp eaten in the United States is an import, according to a spokesman for the National Marine Fisheries Service.

My friend lives on the coast in georgia, me in coastal florida. We both used to be huge shrimp enthusiasts. We would go to the local markets and locally owned restaurants and also to places like red lobster and eat great freshly prepared shrimp when we both lived in Ga. He moved to atlanta but then quickly moved back to coastal georgia because the food was of such lower quality and almost always frozen and tasting bad. He gave up a nice job to have good fresh food. Red Lobster in that south georgia city used to have the same quality and freshness as the locals many years ago - you paid more to get better atmosphere and selection.

Well I went to the red lobster in the local clearwater area last week - TERRIBLE. Freshly frozen fried shrimp, I called the manager over and asked what is the deal - we live on the coast - can't they get FRESH SHRIMP from the local market daily? He said the supply channels don't work like that, not enough local guys shrimping anymore - can't compete with thailand.

After he left I complained loudly why would ANYONE stand in a red lobster LINE for HOURS to get into this RESTAURANT to EAT freshly frozen OVERPRICED shrimp from a foreign land that killed our domestic food production and all the SHEEPLE around me thought I was a nut. Called a local shrimp wholesaler and said where is the good places to eat for FRESH local shrimp, he put me onto some local backwater hole in the wall crap restaurants with Hank Williams playing and some of the most awful smelling blue collars in the city - but DAMN boy HOWDY was that shrimp CHEAP AND GOOD and FRESH and it was 10 minutes to eat - not HOURS like at red lobster. Human stupidity never ceases to amaze me - I told this to my "material girl" sister and she said silly SHADES you don't go to red lobster to eat good fresh food quickly - she goes to be TRENDY and part of the CROWD and sip a drink that some sucker man has bought her?? Huh? America deserves everything its got coming if you ask me.
