Date Set for Wash. Gubernatorial Challenge

Tue Apr 5,11:10 PM ET

WENATCHEE, Wash. - A judge Tuesday set a May 23 trial date for a GOP challenge to the election of Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire.

Judge John Bridges said the trial shouldn't take more than two weeks. The case is expected to be ultimately appealed to the state Supreme Court.

Republicans are challenging the election of Gregoire, who won by just 129 votes in a hand recount of 2.9 million ballots. The GOP candidate, Dino Rossi, won the first two counts.

Republicans contend election workers' errors, especially in the Democratic stronghold of King County, irrevocably tainted results by allowing illegal votes to be counted. Democrats say the hand recount was accurate.

Earlier Tuesday, Gregoire said she's not paying much attention to the election challenge. "I really feel it's time to put it behind us and move on," she said.

At Rossi headquarters — where they're still answering the phones "Rossi revote" — spokeswoman Mary Lane said they're thrilled to have a trial date.

"We think we have more than enough evidence to set this election aside," Lane said.
