I rarely think drawing in an authority is necessary or helpful, especially in ethical matters. You are free to disagree.

You and Grainne are at an impasse based upon what I perceive to be a fundamentally different view point on animal consciousness and our duty to them. This is what ionesco was saying - many of these types of disagreements arise from a different set of core beliefs.

Let me put this to you: If a dog really likes fighting (some do - I had an unneutered male that would seek out conflict), is it ethical to provide opportunities for the dog to fight other dogs? I've never raised dogs for fighting, but neither do I feel that the issue requires dog-fighting experience to be judged ethical or unethical. Most Americans say it is unethical, because the harm for the loser is too egregious and the benefit for the owner too minimal compared to the relative harm. However, dog fighting is a common sport in some less developed countries and among certain groups, even here. Why? Well, look at the people who like to do it.

I think if one considers greyhounds, almost all like to run and chase things. This can be facilitated by a number of means, some of which may involve potentially unethical baiting techniques using, not necessarily other dogs as is the case above, but smaller animals which suffer similar ends as the loser in a dog fight. Do you disagree that people can have equally factually-based opinions yet reasonably come out on different sides of that issue as well?
