It amounts to belief systems, as you pointed out earlier. For Bill, these are "mere animals". The word "mere" relates a diminution of pathos. Now that I think about it, I don't use the word much... and certainly not toward any life form, from one celled cyanobacteria to human beings and any life form between. Perhaps studying nature makes one realize that we are all a part of nature and that careless treatment of animals leads to careless disregard for other things.

I suspect the usage was in sense # 1.
