Laz, Thread,

Over on another thread, I see they are discussing the practicality of adopting special-purpose dogs, after those dogs have outlived their usefulness in whatever special purpose they once served.

I can speak with some experience here, as I unwittingly took into our home such a dog. The dog was about 8 years of age at the time. We kept her, off and on, for about a year. She was a beauty to look at, delightful to hold, but completely wild and willful and untrainable. During that year, I found other prospective homes for her, only to have her returned to me repeatedly.

The story has a happy ending. I eventually placed her with an elderly couple who found her antics charming and entertaining--a lucky fluke for all concerned, to be sure, but the key word here is fluke. - Holly
