Similarly, unless she has family in Switzerland or has been there more than I have, she might very well lose a debate about the way things are done in Switzerland

I disagree. Here's why: a person may have a very narrow view of Switzerland based upon the presumption that their personal knowledge is cyclopedic or even representative. Business trips automatically exclude certain parts of a town or country that might be better understood by reading about them prior to visiting. Most people aren't running surveys with statistically meaningful sampling. As a visitor, you are always experiencing it as a visitor. I've lived in Scotland, but there are things about Scotland that could be best understood by reading. I did that when there and some things were a lot clearer afterward. Some behaviors can be misunderstood by a visitor who hasn't done some reading, causing them to misinterpret their first hand impression. Shy may not be shy, but private. Loudness or even insults may not be anger, but gregariousness.
