PARIS (Reuters) - U.S. shares looked set for modest opening gains on Thursday after Alcoa (NYSE:AA - News) and Dell (NasdaqNM:DELL - News) kicked off a new earnings season with pleasing updates, but oil prices back above $56 a barrel will gnaw at sentiment.
...
U.S. crude prices have surged about 30 percent this year.

----------------------

Imagine how the economy would have done without a 30% increase in crude prices this year. Contrary to popular belief, USD currency devaluation wasn't responsible for a 30% increase in crude prices this year, as the USD certainly didn't drop 30% YTD.

Elmer, I think I'm going to back off further from CCs. Intel is expecting 15%, Dell is expecting 16%. Someone posted there is a delay between consumer spending and an oil price peak of 6 months (meaning, an oil peak today would translate into a consumer spending pickup in 6 months) and WS tends to look 6 months ahead.
