Kohl's said it still expects to earn 35 cents to 37 cents per share in the first quarter, and it plans to open about 95 stores in 2005. The company operated 652 stores as of April 2.

Analysts expect the company to report a profit of 37 cents per share for the quarter.

For the year to date, same-store sales rose 1.7 percent, while total sales grew 13.5 percent to $1.8 billion from $1.59 billion.
