I don't know about generic gun "violence", but from 1976 - 2002, more homicides were committed by blacks than whites (I didn't look for family on family, and friend on friend stats). It is true though that by a large majority, whites are killed by whites, and blacks are killed by blacks. Also more homicides occurred in large cities - than small cities, suburbs, or rural areas. I got my information from the the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics.
